Operable Unit 2 Work Details: Pre-Design Investigation (Hudson River sediments)
- The pre-design sampling and analysis will be similar to work done in previous years at OU2 (water side). There were no reported community questions or concerns during that work.
- The river sediment will be collected from a pontoon or barge vessel from various locations within the OU2 footprint.
- Cores will be transported to the shoreline, brought to an enclosed upland processing area located within the OU1 land footprint, and then transported offsite to a laboratory for analysis.
- Samples will be analyzed for total polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) to further refine the distribution of contamination and finalize the areas requiring remediation.
- Work hours will be Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
- Saturday work is not anticipated, but if required, it will follow the Borough of Edgewater's permitted construction hours.
AIR MONITORING: Pre-Design Investigation (Hudson River sediments)
Throughout the PDI program and completion of the OU2 remedy, Honeywell will implement a robust community air monitoring program.
As part of the field program for the PDI, a EPA-approved community air monitoring plan (CAMP) will be in place to protect the community during sample collection activities.
The CAMP will include real-time air monitoring for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and particulate matter less than 10 micrometers in diameter (PM10) both upwind and downwind of the sampling locations.
Action levels for VOCs and PM10 will be set based on a combination of instantaneous visual data (i.e., for dust) and monitoring data averaged over a 15-minute period.
While exceeding these action levels are not anticipated during the PDI given the nature of the sampling program, they are included to protect the adjacent community and will be used to stop operations in the event any issues are detected.
